October 1, 2025 — On the eve of Thursday’s preseason opener in Abu Dhabi, head coach Nick Nurse said Joel Embiid is showing positive signs in his return from left-knee surgery that limited the league MVP to 19 games last season.
“He looks good, he’s feeling good,” Nurse told PHLY Sports, adding that Embiid “feels a lot better this year at this time of year than he did a year ago.” Embiid, shut down in February 2025, acknowledged the need to stay on the floor more consistently. “Last year I felt pressure from the start,” he said. “I wasn’t close to where I wanted to be, but I felt I had to do something because I care so much about these guys.”
Youth over experience
President of basketball operations Daryl Morey shifted course after last season’s veteran-heavy roster, opting for speed and athleticism. Philadelphia kept the No. 3 draft pick and selected Baylor guard VJ Edgecombe instead of dealing it for immediate help.
Veteran guard Kyle Lowry praised the newcomers’ energy: “They love basketball, they want to work, they get into the gym early, they listen to the coaches.”
Edgecombe revamped his conditioning, adding 10 pounds of muscle, and retooled his three-point shot. “My arc is way better and more consistent,” the rookie said. “It’s rare for me to shoot flat now.”
Maxey embraces leadership role
Entering his sixth season, Tyrese Maxey said he is prepared to lead after often serving as the primary scorer when injuries sidelined Embiid and Paul George last year. “Joel pulled me to the side and told me my voice is going to be needed,” Maxey recalled. “People see how hard I work and how much I care about winning.”
Competition at backup center
Nurse’s staff is evaluating five candidates behind Embiid: holdovers Andre Drummond and Adem Bona, along with newcomers Johni Broome, Jabari Walker and Dominick Barlow. The group will compete throughout camp and the preseason schedule.
Philadelphia faces the Dubai Blue Coats on Thursday to open its exhibition slate, with Embiid’s status still labeled day-to-day.
