Lakers Open New Campaign With LeBron James Unsure About Future

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James offered only a one-word answer — “Maybe” — when Spectrum SportsNet host Chris McGee asked during Monday’s media day if he would return for next year’s session. The brief reply leaves the franchise and its fans unsure whether the 40-year-old forward will extend his career beyond a 23rd NBA season.

James’ uncertainty sets the tone for 2024-25, presenting multiple possibilities: a late-season retirement announcement, an in-season farewell tour, or a decision postponed until summer. “Maybe” is the backdrop for every move the organization makes between now and the end of the schedule.

Roster Changes and Recent Record

Los Angeles posted a 15-8 mark in the 23 games James and Luka Doncic played together last season before a late loss to Minnesota ended the campaign. During the offseason, general manager Rob Pelinka added Deandre Ayton, Marcus Smart and Jake LaRavia, while Doncic arrived slimmer and, according to him, better prepared. “I’m in a better place for sure,” the guard said Monday.

James Keeps His Own Timeline

Asked whether teaming with Doncic would influence his retirement plans, James was direct: “Zero,” he said, adding that playing alongside the guard is “super motivating,” but it will not determine the length of his career.

Until James clarifies his plans — by social post, interview or any other method — the Lakers will move forward under the shadow of that single word.
