NEW ORLEANS — While the New Orleans Pelicans brought two lottery selections into camp, second-rounder Micah Peavy is quickly turning heads. Head coach Willie Green said the 6-7 wing has been “standing out big-time” during the first week of practice, noting Peavy’s competitiveness, defensive instincts and playmaking.

Peavy averaged 17.2 points and 2.3 steals at Georgetown last season and, according to Green, already fits the club’s preferred style of tough, high-character basketball. “He’s smart, he makes the right plays offensively and he doesn’t hurt you,” the coach said.

The Pelicans opened camp Wednesday, and Green described the overall atmosphere as “refreshing” after a disappointing 2024-25 campaign. Guard Jordan Poole, acquired in the offseason, echoed that sentiment. “The vibes are good,” Poole said. “We’re a competitive team, and guys want to get going early and expedite our learning curve.”

Lottery pick Derik Queen remains limited while recovering from left wrist surgery. Green said the rookie big man is participating in some non-contact drills but will not be rushed back to full action.

Poole, who began his career with Golden State before two losing seasons in Washington, welcomed the chance to rejoin a winning environment. “Coming to a situation with a new front office, that is the goal,” he said. “Everybody’s on the same page and it’ll be fun to compete against a really tough Western Conference.”

In the front office, the Pelicans promoted Adam Barnes to assistant general manager. Barnes spent last season as director of college scouting and served as GM of the Birmingham Squadron, the team’s G League affiliate. This is his seventh year with the organization.
