Cavaliers Keep Evaluating Peyton Watson While James Harden Waits on New Deal

The Cleveland Cavaliers are still actively exploring a move for Denver Nuggets restricted free agent Peyton Watson, ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne said during an appearance on “NBA Today.”
Shelburne noted that the ongoing talks are a key reason James Harden has not finalized his new contract with Cleveland, as the veteran guard is allowing the front office room to negotiate.
The Cavaliers have been linked to Watson throughout the offseason, yet reaching an agreement has remained challenging. Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor recently reported that Denver is seeking a first-round draft pick and a quality rotation player in any potential sign-and-trade for the 23-year-old forward.
Watson is also believed to be targeting an annual salary in the $20 million–$25 million range, adding another layer of complexity to the discussions.
While pursuing Watson, Cleveland has examined additional wing options, including Jonathan Kuminga and DeMar DeRozan. The team has already reached an agreement with Mario Hezonja, who is expected to hold a regular rotation spot next season.
Shelburne’s report indicates the Cavaliers plan to keep evaluating wing upgrades before completing Harden’s new deal.
