The Sacramento Kings have told guard Zach LaVine that no role or roster spot is assured after he exercised his $49 million player option in late June, according to team insider James Ham on ESPN 1320 Sacramento.
Ham reported that the front office made it clear LaVine should not expect a guaranteed starting position, a set allotment of minutes or a long-term stay with the franchise. “They’ve been honest with him,” Ham said. “Look, all bets are off if you opt in.”
Sacramento views LaVine’s decision purely as a business move and is keeping every alternative on the table, Ham added. Team officials have indicated a willingness to “try to find you a place to play” if that becomes necessary.
LaVine’s contract value—$49 million for the 2024-25 season—makes a trade difficult unless the Kings are prepared to take back unwanted salaries or attach additional assets. If those talks stall, both sides could eventually explore a buyout, Ham noted.
For now, Sacramento has not ruled out any scenario, leaving open the possibility that LaVine starts the season as the Kings’ shooting guard or moves on before the trade deadline.
