PHILADELPHIA — Newly acquired guard Jaylen Brown said he believes he should have captured last season’s NBA Most Valuable Player award while he was still with the Boston Celtics.
In a video tied to the launch of his new signature shoe, Brown stated, “I’ve been a top-five MVP candidate. Should have been top one, but the media votes for that.” He added that outside opinions no longer drive him and that his priority is continued improvement.
Caldwell-Pope expected, role uncertain
The Sixers are projected to add veteran wing Kentavious Caldwell-Pope once he clears waivers, according to The Philly Voice. Head coach Nick Nurse is known for a tight rotation, and league sources told the outlet that Caldwell-Pope will have to fight for minutes behind reserves Dean Wade and Anfernee Simons. He is also expected to compete with returnee Dominick Barlow and rookie guard Labaron Philon Jr.
Caldwell-Pope, 31, struggled offensively with the Memphis Grizzlies last year, shooting 41.0 percent from the floor and 31.6 percent from beyond the arc. Even so, Philadelphia values his championship pedigree and ability to complement star talent.
Backup center still on the board
Philadelphia continues to examine trade possibilities for depth behind Joel Embiid. Reporter Adam Aaronson pointed to New Orleans Pelicans center Yves Missi, 22, as a potential target who could offer both immediate support and long-term upside. The price, however, is expected to be high.
If talks for Missi do not progress, the 76ers could pivot to Utah Jazz big man Jaxson Hayes as an alternative, Aaronson added.
The Sixers’ roster remains in flux as the front office weighs veteran experience against rotational fit ahead of training camp.
