The National Basketball Association’s examination of alleged salary-cap circumvention involving Kawhi Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers could remain unresolved for several more years, possibly stretching to 2027 if the dispute enters arbitration, ESPN’s Baxter Holmes reported.
The inquiry, now approaching its first anniversary, is focused on whether Leonard received improper financial benefits tied to sponsorship deals with former Clippers partner Aspiration. League investigators are trying to determine whether those arrangements violated NBA rules by supplementing the forward’s basketball earnings.
Commissioner Adam Silver recently said he hoped the matter would be settled before the 2024-25 season begins. According to ESPN, that timetable could collapse if the NBA, the Clippers and the National Basketball Players Association cannot reach agreement on the findings or on any discipline. In that scenario, the case would be referred to an independent arbitrator, a process that could add years to the timeline.
Los Angeles has repeatedly denied wrongdoing. Team officials told ESPN they plan to contest any penalties, while sources close to the NBPA said the union would seek arbitration if it believes the league lacks evidence to justify punishment.
The investigation also casts uncertainty over Leonard’s pending trade to the Toronto Raptors, agreed upon last month but not yet completed. Any sanctions issued by the league would accompany the All-Star forward to his new club, and it is unclear whether a move to arbitration would further postpone finalizing the deal.
For now, the league’s longest-running offseason storyline remains without a clear endpoint.
