LeBron James’ record-setting pay cut has created an unusual comparison: at least 18 men’s college basketball players are projected to make more money than the NBA star during the 2026-27 season.
Reporters Brendan Marks and Joe Rexrode of The Athletic estimate that name, image and likeness (NIL) deals will push the earnings of at least 18 collegiate athletes above the approximately $3.88 million James will receive from the Philadelphia 76ers that year.
James, 39, earned $52.63 million with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2023-24. He then accepted a two-year contract worth roughly $8 million with Philadelphia, including a player option for the second season. The $48.75 million year-over-year reduction marks the largest single-season salary drop in NBA history.
Despite the cut, James remains one of basketball’s highest lifetime earners, collecting more than $580 million in NBA salary alone before endorsements and investments. He chose the 76ers, he said, because he believes they offer his best chance to win a fifth championship.
The comparison underscores the financial transformation of college basketball since NIL rules took effect, allowing athletes to profit from endorsements, appearances and personal branding while still in school.
