Klutch Sports CEO Rich Paul said this week that LeBron James will announce his next NBA destination only when the four-time MVP is ready, three weeks after the league’s most closely watched free-agency period began.
“We’re not going to be rushed,” Paul told reporters. “It’s his choice to make, and when he makes the choice, he’ll make it.”
The delay has left several teams awaiting word, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has acknowledged that the uncertainty surrounding James is affecting the league’s offseason schedule.
Paul, 42, has become one of the sport’s most influential representatives while maintaining a low-key public profile. Raised above his father’s confectionery on Cleveland’s East Side, he began his career selling vintage jerseys from the trunk of his car. He met James at Akron–Canton Airport when the then–high school star noticed an authentic Warren Moon throwback jersey Paul was carrying.
Since founding Klutch Sports Group in 2012, Paul has expanded the agency beyond basketball to include football, branding, media projects and philanthropy. Current and former clients describe him as hands-on, whether negotiating maximum contracts for superstars or securing deals for veterans seeking one more season.
Paul’s growing influence has drawn criticism from some front-office executives and portions of the fan base, who view Klutch as wielding outsized power over roster moves. Nonetheless, players commonly cite a high level of trust in his client-first approach.
For now, Paul’s message remains consistent: James alone will decide when the wait is over.
