LeBron James’ long-awaited free-agency announcement may have been pushed back after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver publicly noted that the league’s schedule could not be completed until the four-time MVP revealed his plans, according to Cleveland radio host Andy Baskin.
Baskin told listeners on 92.3 The Fan’s “Baskin & Phelps” show that sources close to James indicated the star and his representatives were ready to disclose his next destination while he was in New York last week for Fanatics Fest. The group, Baskin said, grew “irritated” when Silver highlighted the impact of James’ decision on the league calendar, leading them to hit pause on any announcement.
“They were comfortable going public as early as last week,” Baskin explained on air. “Once the commissioner spoke up, they decided to wait.” Baskin added that the information could not be independently verified.
Decision Still Looms Three Weeks After Lakers Exit
James notified the Los Angeles Lakers nearly three weeks ago that he would not return for a fifth season, yet no clear signal has emerged about where he will play next. League insiders continue to point to the Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers as serious contenders.
The Golden State Warriors, once viewed as a possible landing spot, are now increasingly doubtful about their chances, ESPN’s Anthony Slater reported Wednesday.
