Wembanyama Leaves Money on the Table to Keep Spurs’ Cap Flexible

San Antonio Spurs center Victor Wembanyama finalized a five-year, $252.3 million rookie-scale extension earlier this month, deliberately excluding “Rose Rule” language that could have raised the value to 30 percent of the 2027-28 salary cap.

By capping the first year of the deal at 25 percent of that season’s cap, the 20-year-old could be forgoing roughly $50 million over the life of the contract. The decision, he said, was made to give the front office additional room to strengthen the roster in future years.

“The reality of today’s NBA is that a team’s potential often goes unfulfilled because of money,” Wembanyama told The Athletic during an interview for the upcoming video game NBA 2K27, where he will appear on the cover. “I just want to make sure it’s never our case.”

Choosing not to include the escalator clause means the French star will not receive an automatic raise to 30 percent of the cap even if he earns another All-NBA selection, wins Defensive Player of the Year, or captures the MVP award next season—accolades for which he is widely considered a contender.

The savings could prove critical as San Antonio manages a payroll that will soon include extension talks for recent lottery picks Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper, who become eligible over the next two summers. Remaining below the luxury-tax aprons would give the club greater latitude to add talent through free agency or trades.

Wembanyama’s stance follows a leaguewide trend highlighted by New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson, who drew praise for accepting less than the maximum in his own deal, a move that helped the Knicks assemble a deeper roster that ultimately defeated San Antonio in the NBA Finals.

For Wembanyama, the extension and the video-game cover are milestones, but he emphasized that they are only steps in his larger ambitions. “It’s all happening very quick, but I am not satisfied, and I want it to happen quicker,” he said.

The Spurs finished last season with a strong regular-season record and a deep playoff run, and their franchise centerpiece hopes his financial sacrifice converts that promise into multiple championships.
