New Portland Trail Blazers head coach Micah Nori is moving quickly to define Scoot Henderson’s role before training camp, marking the third coaching change the 22-year-old guard has experienced in under 12 months.
In an interview with The Rose Garden Report, Nori said his priority is to give the 2023 No. 3 overall pick enough space to attack the basket. “We’ve got to make sure the corners are filled and the outlets are there so he can get downhill,” Nori explained. He added that the coaching staff will emphasize decision-making and controlled speed to help Henderson read defenses more effectively.
The crowded backcourt now features Ja Morant alongside veterans Jrue Holiday and Damian Lillard. Despite that depth, Nori said Henderson could see minutes off the ball, stressing that multiple playmakers can coexist because “they’re all willing passers.”
Lineup Size Could Vary
Nori spent the past five seasons as an assistant in Minnesota, where two-big lineups were common. In Portland, he expects to toggle between larger and smaller groups. With Robert Williams III and rookie Donovan Clingan available, twin-tower looks remain an option, but Nori said the team could also downsize, using Toumani Camara at center and even Holiday at power forward to create different matchups.
Triano Draws Interest Overseas
Assistant coach Jay Triano, who agreed to join Nori’s staff earlier this month, has been contacted by Paris Basketball regarding its head-coaching vacancy, according to The Stein Line. Triano’s commitment to Portland remains unchanged for now.
City Submits Term Sheet to Keep Blazers
Portland officials delivered a draft term sheet to the franchise this week, the first formal proposal aimed at keeping the team in the city, KATU reported. Mayor Keith Wilson recently accused the organization of withholding key information about planned upgrades, while NBA commissioner Adam Silver called Moda Center renovation discussions “off track.” The City Council is scheduled to vote on a tentative agreement on August 12.
