LeBron James told two New York audiences on Thursday that his long-awaited free-agency choice will arrive “soon,” though he declined to reveal a favorite.
The four-time NBA champion first appeared at Fanatics Fest for a live recording of his “Mind The Game” podcast alongside Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton, then spoke with Boardroom co-founder Rich Kleiman at the CNBC and Boardroom Game Plan Summit. Asked about his timeline at the second event, James replied, “I won’t hold you guys up too much longer.”
ESPN’s Shams Charania said on The Pat McAfee Show later in the day that an announcement could come next week, noting that James and agent Rich Paul have collected all the information they need.
Multiple teams still in play
League sources continue to link James to the Cavaliers, Heat, 76ers, Warriors, Timberwolves and possibly the Nuggets. During the podcast taping, an 11-year-old attendee asked how he will choose. “It’s a big decision for not only myself but my family,” James answered. “I’m looking for the place that feels right for me as a player and a person—and for my happiness and my family’s happiness.”
Haliburton’s recruiting effort
Haliburton said he texted James in June—before the superstar opted out of his Lakers contract—to pitch Indiana. “He texted me back two laughing-crying faces, and that’s all I got,” Haliburton recalled, adding he has stopped pursuing the idea.
Farewell to Los Angeles
James used the podcast stage to thank the Lakers for eight seasons. “One of the most historical franchises in the world,” he said, praising governor Jeanie Buss, the Buss family, executive Rob Pelinka, his coaches and teammates. “That was an unbelievable ride.”
Heat, league office await word
In Miami, Heat president Pat Riley told reporters he does not know where his club stands. “Obviously, we’ve had conversations with Rich [Paul] and they were very good,” Riley said. “If [LeBron] wants to come to the 305, we’ve got a golf course, nice weather and no state tax.” Newly acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo added he would be “very, very excited” to join forces with James.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said schedule makers cannot finalize the 2026-27 slate until James picks a destination. “Teams are calling us, networks are calling us,” Silver explained. “It will influence opening week, Christmas Day, everything.”
