Bronny James is not expected to automatically follow his father, LeBron James, to a new franchise if the four-time MVP departs the Los Angeles Lakers this summer, league sources told The Athletic’s Dan Woike.
The 21-year-old guard has one guaranteed season left with the Lakers after the team picked up his option earlier in the offseason. Although Los Angeles could still explore trade scenarios, sources indicated no organization — including the Lakers, the James family or a potential LeBron destination — views the two players as a package deal.
Progress in Year Two
Bronny made noticeable strides during his sophomore campaign. He shot 40.9% from the floor and 38.6% from three-point range across 42 NBA appearances in 2025-26. In 14 G League outings with the South Bay Lakers, he averaged 15.6 points, 3.6 assists and 3.1 rebounds while converting 56.0% of his shots.
Crowded Lakers Backcourt
Despite that growth, minutes could be scarce in Los Angeles. Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves, Quentin Grimes, Collin Sexton, Jaden Hardy and first-round pick Cameron Carr are all expected to compete for backcourt roles when training camp opens.
LeBron’s Decision Looms
Meanwhile, LeBron James’ free-agency choice continues to headline the NBA offseason. The Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves are viewed as the frontrunners, with anticipation building for a resolution in the coming days.
