Miami Heat owner Micky Arison has been unanimously chosen to serve as the next chairman of the NBA Board of Governors, the league announced on Tuesday.
Arison will succeed Larry Tanenbaum, the Toronto Raptors owner who has held the position since 2017. Tanenbaum’s tenure as a Raptors owner began in February 1998 and concluded in July 2026 after Rogers Communications acquired his remaining 25% stake in Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver thanked Tanenbaum for nearly a decade of leadership and said Arison’s long history with the league positions him well for the role. “Micky’s long record of service on the Board, his strong relationships with his fellow team owners and his deep understanding of our game and business make him an exceptional choice to assume this important leadership role,” Silver said in the league’s press release.
Arison, inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2025, said he is eager to guide the league alongside Silver and fellow governors. “I look forward to working closely in this new capacity with Adam, the league office and my fellow team governors to champion our teams and players, ensuring we continue to deliver exciting and unforgettable experiences for our fans,” he said.
His term as chairman will begin in September 2026 following the NBA’s annual Board of Governors meeting.
