LAS VEGAS — July 10, 2026: Los Angeles Lakers rookie guard Cameron Carr acknowledged the need for defensive improvement after a standout offensive performance in the team’s Las Vegas Summer League opener at Thomas & Mack Center.
The No. 1 draft pick finished with 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting, adding two blocks and a steal in the Lakers’ victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder. Despite those numbers, Carr said his focus remains on tightening his on-ball coverage.
“I’ve got to be a lot better defensively,” Carr said postgame. “I can get as many deflections as I want, but if you give up a straight-line drive you can’t help anybody. I need to be more aware, talk more and avoid becoming a spot opponents target.”
Lakers Build Momentum After Early Slip
Los Angeles has won three straight contests—one in San Francisco’s California Classic and two in Las Vegas—after dropping its first Summer League game. Carr credited the California swing for helping the roster settle into a rhythm.
“San Francisco was big for us,” he said. “The first game was knocking rust off, but we bounced back against Miami and it prepared us for where we are now. Every game we’re getting more comfortable and finding our pace.”
Four More Chances to Show Growth
The Lakers are guaranteed at least four additional matchups in Las Vegas, providing Carr with further opportunities to sustain his scoring while addressing defensive lapses.
Rookie Enjoys Vegas Stage
Carr also relished the energy inside Thomas & Mack Center, noting the significance of playing in front of family. “It’s a blessing every time I step on the court, especially when my mom is watching,” he said.
The Lakers continue Summer League play later this week as Carr looks to pair his dynamic offense with the defensive consistency he is seeking.
