The San Antonio Spurs and 7-foot-4 standout Victor Wembanyama have reached agreement on a five-year, $252 million maximum contract extension, league sources told ESPN.

The new deal, characterized as a full “designated rookie” max, is expected to keep the 20-year-old French star with San Antonio through the 2030-31 season. The contract will become official once the NBA’s offseason moratorium ends and the league finalizes salary-cap figures, according to the sources.

Wembanyama, selected first overall in the 2023 draft, completed his debut season as one of the league’s most versatile big men, prompting the franchise to lock in its cornerstone well ahead of schedule. The agreement represents the largest contract the Spurs have ever awarded and the maximum salary permitted for a player of Wembanyama’s service time under the current collective bargaining agreement.

San Antonio retained matching rights on the final two years of Wembanyama’s rookie deal but moved quickly to secure a long-term commitment. The extension will supersede the final season of his rookie scale and start at 30 percent of the projected 2026-27 salary cap, escalating annually.

The Spurs finished last season 22-60 while prioritizing development around Wembanyama. With cap space and draft assets available, the franchise is expected to continue building a roster that complements the young center’s unique skill set.
