LAS VEGAS — The San Antonio Spurs have locked up reigning Defensive Player of the Year Victor Wembanyama on a five-year rookie-scale maximum extension projected at about $252.3 million, the club announced Friday.
The agreement, first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, includes a fifth-year player option. Notably, Wembanyama declined to attach Rose Rule escalators that could have increased the contract’s value by roughly $50 million if he hit specific performance targets next season, preserving future cap flexibility for San Antonio.
Hours before the deal was finalized, the 20-year-old posted on social media, “Spurs family, I’m here to stay. Whatever it takes.” Wembanyama finished third in MVP voting and led the Spurs back to the NBA Finals this past season.
Trail Blazers add Micah Potter
The Portland Trail Blazers claimed center Micah Potter off waivers after the Indiana Pacers released him earlier in the week. Potter averaged 9.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and shot 42.3 percent from three in 47 games for Indiana last year.
Portland’s frontcourt already features Donovan Clingan, Robert Williams III, Yang Hansen and Branden Carlson, but Williams’ injury history and the inexperience behind him made the 25-year-old Potter an appealing, non-guaranteed addition heading into training camp.
Nuggets sign second-rounder Trevon Brazile
The Denver Nuggets have signed forward Trevon Brazile, their second-round pick acquired from San Antonio last month, to a standard NBA contract. Contract terms were not disclosed; second-rounders on standard deals typically ink three- or four-year pacts.
Brazile, 6-foot-10, averaged 13.0 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.6 blocks as a senior at Arkansas, helping the Razorbacks reach the Sweet 16. His signing adds another inexpensive young piece as Denver weighs restricted free-agent decisions on Peyton Watson and Spencer Jones.
