PHILADELPHIA — The 76ers have added one of the NBA’s most accurate long-range shooters, signing free-agent guard Anfernee Simons to a two-year, $12.3 million contract that includes a player option for the second season.

Simons, expected to spell All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey, told reporters Tuesday that concerns about an undersized Philadelphia backcourt can be overcome with collective effort. “When a team is connected defensively, a lot of those things can be mitigated,” he said, noting the heightened defensive intensity he experienced during his time in Boston.

Front-office challenge in Philadelphia

New president of basketball operations Mike Gansey reshaped the roster this summer, highlighted by a blockbuster trade for Jaylen Brown. According to league figures, Joel Embiid, Brown and Maxey are projected to earn more than $500 million combined over the next three seasons, leaving limited flexibility unless ownership is willing to enter the luxury tax to build championship-level depth.

Nets rookie flashes playmaking

In Sacramento’s California Classic on Monday, No. 6 overall pick Mikel Brown Jr. recorded 10 points and four assists in the fourth quarter of his Summer League debut. “He’s electric,” Nets Summer League coach Dutch Gaitley said. “He showed his ability to get downhill.”

Knicks secure wing depth

Restricted free agent Mohamed Diawara signed a four-year contract with New York on Monday. With Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby atop the depth chart, Diawara projects as the lone true reserve wing and could play about 25 minutes per game.
