CLEVELAND — Newly extended guard Donovan Mitchell would welcome the possibility of LeBron James signing with the Cleveland Cavaliers for a third tenure, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
Charania reported that Mitchell, who agreed to a four-year maximum extension earlier this summer, is on board should the NBA’s all-time scoring leader decide to return to the franchise where he won championships in 2016 and 2015. Mitchell has reportedly been involved in Cleveland’s offseason discussions as the front office looks for ways to improve a roster that reached last season’s Eastern Conference finals.
Mitchell has frequently mentioned growing up watching James and has forged a strong relationship with the four-time MVP since arriving in Cleveland via trade in 2022. His endorsement offers additional momentum to ongoing speculation about James’s next move.
James, now a free agent after parting with the Los Angeles Lakers, has been linked to several contenders, including the Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Philadelphia 76ers, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and Denver Nuggets. Whether he ultimately chooses Cleveland remains one of the offseason’s most significant unanswered questions.
For the Cavaliers, locking up Mitchell was their first major piece of summer business. Any subsequent move for James would further reshape a team aiming to return to the NBA Finals for the first time since 2018.
