TORONTO — Kyle Lowry has officially retired from professional basketball after signing a symbolic one-day contract with the Toronto Raptors, allowing the six-time All-Star to end his career with the franchise he helped lead to an NBA championship.

The Raptors announced the agreement and Lowry’s retirement on Monday. Specific terms of the contract were not disclosed, as the deal was arranged solely to let the veteran guard conclude his playing days as a member of the organization.

Lowry, 38, spent nine seasons in Toronto, becoming the franchise’s all-time leader in assists and triple-doubles while earning a reputation as the emotional catalyst of the 2019 championship team. He also played for the Memphis Grizzlies, Houston Rockets, Miami Heat and Philadelphia 76ers during his 18-year NBA career.

The Philadelphia native was selected 24th overall by Memphis in the 2006 draft after two seasons at Villanova. He finishes his NBA tenure with more than 16,000 points and 7,000 assists across 1,100 regular-season games.

Lowry’s No. 7 jersey is expected to be retired by the Raptors at a later date, though the team has not yet set a timeline for a ceremony.
