Los Angeles Lakers guard Chris Mañon says he is studying Alex Caruso and Jrue Holiday as examples while he works to secure a full-time NBA role.
Mañon spoke after the Lakers’ California Classic Summer League win over the Miami Heat, telling reporters he focuses on “guys that are pests on the ball and off the ball” and specifically named Caruso and Holiday.
Defensive résumé in place
The 24-year-old re-signed with Los Angeles on a two-way contract earlier this offseason. Last year, he spent most of his rookie campaign with the South Bay Lakers, earning a spot on the G League All-Defensive Team after ranking inside the top 10 in steals. Over 33 games he averaged 10.3 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 2.0 steals.
Offensive growth remains key
Mañon’s next step is improving his perimeter shooting. He hit 32.0% from three-point range in the G League and just 30.4% across four collegiate seasons. The Lakers will evaluate that progress during Summer League and training camp.
Following the Caruso path
Caruso was undrafted in 2016, developed in the G League, then earned a standard Lakers contract and became a rotation mainstay on the club’s 2020 championship team. Now with the Oklahoma City Thunder, he helped them capture the 2025 title and has multiple NBA All-Defensive Team selections.
Holiday, a two-time All-Star and 2021 NBA champion, is widely regarded as one of the league’s premier two-way guards. Mañon said he studies Holiday’s ability to disrupt offenses while contributing efficiently on the other end.
Summer League standouts
While Mañon concentrates on defense, rookie Cameron Carr has provided early offense for Los Angeles. Carr, the Lakers’ 2026 first-round pick, admitted pregame nerves but delivered strong scoring performances during the California Classic.
Mañon and Carr will continue showcasing their skills when the Lakers open play in the Las Vegas Summer League later this week.
