The Boston Celtics have publicly detailed their reasons for sending All-Star guard Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers, but veteran NBA writer Chris Mannix remains unconvinced.
In a column released Monday, the Sports Illustrated reporter reviewed president of basketball operations Brad Stevens’s explanation. Stevens said the move centered on “optionality,” freeing future salary-cap space and collecting additional first-round draft picks while preventing the club from committing most of its payroll to two players.
Mannix recognized the logic, noting that Boston secured valuable future picks and brought in 36-year-old forward Paul George, whose expiring contract could be flipped again. If every element falls perfectly into place, he wrote, the Celtics might load up for another significant move built around Jayson Tatum.
Still, Mannix listed several concerns. George’s recent injury history raises questions about his reliability, and the draft selections may never develop into impact contributors. Without a subsequent blockbuster trade, those assets offer limited help during Tatum’s prime championship window, he argued.
The timing of the trade also puzzled Mannix. He pointed out that the market for George appeared thin this offseason and said several league executives wondered whether Boston could have secured a stronger return by waiting.
Stevens, for his part, told reporters the decision was not motivated by cost-cutting or pressure from Tatum. He called it one of the toughest choices of his front-office tenure and stressed that every scenario was thoroughly evaluated before moving Brown.
Mannix concluded that the transaction could still succeed. However, if Brown flourishes in Philadelphia, George’s health issues persist and the incoming draft picks fail to gain value, the trade may ultimately define Stevens’s legacy in Boston.
