The Minnesota Timberwolves have stepped up efforts to land LeBron James, 41, when free agency opens for the 2026-27 season, according to Jon Krawczynski of The Athletic.
Team executives have communicated with representatives for the four-time NBA champion and believe Minnesota can provide a strong path to his fifth title. The club recently agreed to trade Julius Randle and Naz Reid, creating a vacancy at power forward that James could fill.
Minnesota’s roster already features LaMelo Ball, Anthony Edwards and Jaden McDaniels to lighten James’s offensive workload, while McDaniels and Rudy Gobert could share defensive duties. The Timberwolves also lost veterans Mike Conley, Joe Ingles and Kyle Anderson this offseason, a gap the front office thinks James’s locker-room presence could address.
In its pitch, the organization is emphasizing that the franchise has never won an NBA championship. Executives believe helping deliver the city’s first title—something the NFL’s Vikings, NHL’s Wild and MLB’s Twins have also yet to achieve in recent decades—would enhance James’s legacy.
Cap constraints leave Minnesota able to offer little more than the veteran minimum because the team is near the league’s second tax apron. Sources told Krawczynski that salary is not James’s top priority; finding a competitive environment is considered more important. The club could still pursue transactions to open additional financial room.
Optimism in Minneapolis grew after agent Rich Paul listed the Timberwolves among 10 potential destinations on his latest “Game Over” podcast with Max Kellerman. Paul praised the team’s core, president of basketball operations Tim Connelly, and the ownership group led by Marc Lore and Alex Rodriguez. Kellerman echoed that view, arguing that winning in Minnesota would carry unique weight compared with more established contenders.
The other teams on Paul’s whiteboard were the 76ers, Heat, Nuggets, Cavaliers, Warriors, Mavericks, Knicks, Spurs and Celtics. Some, including San Antonio and New York, are reportedly unlikely to pursue James, while Boston and Dallas are considered longer shots.
