Kawhi Leonard is returning to the Toronto Raptors seven seasons after guiding the franchise to its only NBA championship, league sources confirmed.
Raptors
Toronto finalized a blockbuster deal with the Los Angeles Clippers to reacquire the two-time Finals MVP, a move few executives anticipated. Initial speculation, reported by TSN’s Josh Lewenberg, suggested Leonard’s interest in the Raptors was leverage for a larger extension with the Clippers. Instead, the forward heads north as the centerpiece of a roster reset built around Scottie Barnes and a young core.
The Raptors believe their medical staff can manage Leonard’s workload better than any other organization, aiming to keep him on the floor this season and beyond. Sportsnet’s Michael Grange reports the sides are expected to negotiate a two-year extension worth roughly $126 million.
Toronto weighed the risks tied to Leonard’s injury history against the prospect of standing pat in an increasingly competitive Eastern Conference and opted to accelerate its timetable.
Knicks
In New York, the Knicks remain active in the market for frontcourt depth after losing center Mitchell Robinson to the Celtics and big man Ariel Hukporti to the 76ers. HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto notes the club could bring back veteran guard Jordan Clarkson, who finished last season at Madison Square Garden.
Before signing with Denver on a one-year contract, former No. 2 pick Marvin Bagley III drew interest from the Knicks, according to Scotto. New York has also inquired about other interior options, but the Pelicans have informed teams that rookie Yves Missi is not available.
Nets
Brooklyn’s summer overhaul left second-year forward Danny Wolf fighting for minutes. The Nets added Julius Randle in a trade and signed Moritz Wagner, crowding the frontcourt rotation ahead of training camp.
Wolf, 22, spent the offseason increasing his strength, improving his perimeter shooting, and refining his finishing at the rim. He built a solid rapport with head coach Jordi Fernandez during his rookie campaign, and team officials still value his versatility as they reshape the roster.
The Raptors aim to keep Leonard healthy for another title push, the Knicks search for a reliable big continues, and the Nets evaluate how their young forward fits amid a revamped depth chart.
