The Cleveland Cavaliers have secured second-round selection Meleek Thomas on a four-year rookie contract worth $9.3 million, according to Goodman Hoops’ Jeff Goodman.
Goodman reports that $6.4 million of the agreement is guaranteed. The deal was completed under the NBA’s second-round pick exception and carries the league’s minimum salary structure.
Thomas, 19, was taken with the 34th overall pick after a standout freshman campaign at Arkansas. The 6-foot-3 combo guard posted averages of 15.7 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals across 37 games, shooting 41.6 percent from beyond the arc and 84.4 percent at the free-throw line on his way to SEC All-Freshman Team honors.
Once projected as a late first-rounder, Thomas slipped into the early second round, where Cleveland made the selection. He is expected to headline the Cavaliers’ Summer League squad before vying for a roster spot in training camp.
The Cavaliers officially announced Thomas’s signing on Wednesday, the same day the club added former Miami center Ernest Udeh Jr. on a two-way contract. Udeh, 6-foot-11, earned ACC All-Defensive Team recognition last season after averaging 6.7 points, 9.2 rebounds and 1.4 blocks while leading the nation in defensive-rebounding rate.
