The Los Angeles Clippers and Toronto Raptors are still negotiating a trade involving Kawhi Leonard, and multiple reports indicate discussions are moving forward.
ESPN insider Shams Charania told SportsCenter on Monday that both front offices appear motivated to finalize a deal, while NBA TV’s Chris Haynes noted the Clippers could face difficulty resuming normal operations with Leonard if talks collapse.
Toronto’s latest proposal, according to Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints, includes Brandon Ingram, rookie guard Gradey Dick and one first-round pick. League sources told Azarly the Clippers believe that package is insufficient. Michael Grange of Sportsnet added that Toronto has no interest in adding young forwards Collin Murray-Boyles or JaKobe Walter to any offer.
Should Los Angeles ultimately part with Leonard, team owner Steve Ballmer reportedly wants to keep the roster in contention. Azarly reported that Celtics All-Star Jaylen Brown is at the top of the Clippers’ wish list, though there is no obvious path to acquiring him.
Celtics
Brown is said to be frustrated with Boston’s offseason approach after leading the club to 56 wins while Jayson Tatum recovered from a torn Achilles. Nonetheless, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, Bobby Marks and Charania all reported Monday that Brown’s market has not met expectations. Boston is believed to be seeking four first-round picks, with no team currently willing to pay that price.
Cavaliers
Cleveland continues contract talks with forward Dean Wade, per Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com. Both sides remain interested in a new deal before free agency opens, though the Cavaliers are mindful of avoiding the NBA’s second tax apron for a second consecutive year.
Pelicans
New Orleans has fielded multiple offers of two first-round selections for forward Trey Murphy III, Yahoo Sports’ Kevin O’Connor reported. The Pelicans are reportedly holding out for at least three first-rounders and are not inclined to move the 23-year-old.
Heat
O’Connor also noted that Miami is exploring trades to gain salary flexibility, with second-year forward Nikola Jovic mentioned in talks. The Heat are attempting to create room to re-sign veteran guard Norman Powell.
