Golden State is investigating a deal for Washington Wizards center Anthony Davis, league sources told Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports.

Team officials believe acquiring Davis could improve their chances of signing LeBron James when he reaches free agency this summer, according to the report.

A trade built around Davis would likely require the Warriors to send Jimmy Butler’s $57 million expiring contract to Washington for salary-matching purposes. Additional draft compensation would be part of any proposal, and a third club might be needed if the Wizards prefer not to take back Butler, who is recovering from a torn ACL.

Washington has publicly stated it hopes to keep Davis, whom the franchise obtained at February’s trade deadline, making negotiations uncertain. The 32-year-old big man will be eligible on Aug. 6 to sign a four-year, $275 million extension.

Golden State has also been connected to guards Anfernee Simons and Collin Sexton and veteran center Jock Landale, but sources say Davis is currently among the organization’s primary offseason targets as it looks to construct another championship-level core around Stephen Curry.
