The Houston Rockets are expected to pursue Los Angeles Lakers guard Marcus Smart should he decline his $5.4 million player option before the June 29 deadline, league sources told reporters Marc Stein and Jake Fischer.
Smart, 32, is “very much” considering opting out and testing free agency, according to the report. His longstanding relationship with Rockets head coach Ime Udoka—who led Smart during their time with the Boston Celtics—has positioned Houston as a serious suitor.
The veteran guard’s value rose during the Lakers’ first-round win over Houston. With Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves sidelined, Smart delivered 21 and 25 points in Games 2 and 3, adding a combined 17 assists, 10 steals and three blocks.
Los Angeles can offer Smart its $9.5 million room exception—roughly a $4 million raise—but multiple teams are expected to express interest if he reaches the open market.
Smart and center Deandre Ayton both hold player options for next season; league chatter indicates the guard is more likely to return to Los Angeles than Ayton. For now, Smart’s decision on June 29 will determine whether the Rockets get a chance to bid.
