On June 26, 1996, the Los Angeles Lakers engineered a draft-day trade that forever altered the franchise, acquiring 17-year-old guard Kobe Bryant with the 13th overall pick of the NBA Draft.
The Lakers entered the offseason seeking major changes after back-to-back first-round playoff exits. General manager Jerry West believed Bryant, a standout from Lower Merion High School in Pennsylvania, could be the cornerstone of that turnaround. No high-school guard had ever jumped directly to the NBA, but Bryant’s pre-draft workouts—including an eye-catching one-on-one session in which he dominated former Defensive Player of the Year Michael Cooper—convinced West of his star potential.
Los Angeles originally held the 24th selection and knew Bryant would not remain on the board that long. Simultaneously, the front office was preparing a free-agent run at Orlando Magic center Shaquille O’Neal and needed salary-cap flexibility. To clear space, the club negotiated a deal the day before the draft, sending starting center Vlade Divac to the Charlotte Hornets for the No. 13 pick.
Moments before Charlotte was on the clock, the Lakers informed the Hornets to select Bryant. Although league records list the Hornets as making the pick, the transaction—finalized on July 9—had been arranged by Los Angeles.
The swap nearly unraveled when Divac threatened retirement rather than accept a trade, but the veteran center eventually agreed, allowing the Lakers to proceed. Weeks later, Los Angeles signed O’Neal, pairing the dominant big man with the rookie guard to create one of the NBA’s most celebrated duos.
The 1996 draft class is regarded as one of the strongest in league history, featuring future Hall of Famers Allen Iverson, Ray Allen and Steve Nash alongside Bryant. Additional first-round talent included Peja Stojakovic, Jermaine O’Neal, Stephon Marbury and Antoine Walker, while Marcus Camby and Derek Fisher became key contributors on successful teams.
Bryant would go on to become the Lakers’ all-time leading scorer and a five-time NBA champion, but the foundation for that legacy was laid with the franchise’s decisive move to secure the 13th pick on draft night 1996.
