The Pacific Division produced a flurry of personnel moves during and after Tuesday’s NBA Draft, headlined by Golden State’s selection of Michigan forward Yaxel Lendeborg with the No. 11 pick.
Warriors secure versatile forward at No. 11
Lendeborg, who turns 24 before opening night, admitted he once rooted against Stephen Curry during the 2016 Finals but said he is now eager to learn from the Warriors star. General manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. downplayed concerns about the rookie’s age, noting, “He’s not 38,” and praised the newcomer’s ability to defend multiple positions, handle the ball and play small-ball center.
ESPN cameras captured an animated discussion between Dunleavy and owner Joe Lacob after Milwaukee grabbed guard Brayden Burries at No. 10. Dunleavy confirmed the conversation centered on trade offers for the 11th spot, but said the front office ultimately agreed on keeping the pick and drafting Lendeborg.
Clippers add Keaton Wagler at No. 5
The L.A. Clippers chose Illinois guard Keaton Wagler with the fifth pick. President of basketball operations Lawrence Frank cited Wagler’s size, high basketball IQ and three-level skill set as key factors. Frank added that point guard Darius Garland endorsed the choice and predicted star forward Kawhi Leonard would appreciate the pick’s combination of length, shooting and feel for the game. Frank reiterated the organization’s plan “to win with Kawhi.”
Suns trade into first round for Koa Peat
Phoenix entered the draft with only the No. 47 selection but moved up to No. 30 to take Arizona native Koa Peat. The Suns were unable to conduct a workout because Peat was projected to go much earlier, yet met with him Sunday once trade talks gained traction.
Lakers expand analytics staff
The Los Angeles Lakers hired former Pelicans basketball analytics coordinator Dominic Samangy as a basketball analyst, further bolstering the franchise’s research and development group.
