Boston, MA — During a recent livestream, Celtics guard Jaylen Brown described the upcoming 2025-26 campaign as the beginning of “a new era” for the franchise after an eventful offseason that reshaped the roster.
Speaking on September 21, Brown acknowledged that “half the team is gone” following a series of moves designed to trim salary and avoid the NBA’s second apron. Boston traded Kristaps Porziņģis to the Hawks and Jrue Holiday to the Trail Blazers, while championship-team center Luke Kornet signed with the Spurs. Veteran big man Al Horford is expected to join the Warriors in free agency. Additional transactions could follow as the club looks to cut roughly $12 million more to slip below the luxury-tax line.
Boston’s push for payroll flexibility accelerated after star forward Jayson Tatum suffered a torn Achilles during last season’s playoffs, clouding the team’s short-term title hopes. With several familiar faces departed, Brown and Derrick White stand as the only returning starters when the Celtics open their season on October 22.
The 28-year-old Brown also provided a medical update, saying he enjoyed “a great healing summer” following right-knee arthroscopic debridement in June. Team doctors had diagnosed a partial meniscus tear, and surgery was chosen over rest to ensure full recovery before training camp.
“Everything has kind of changed and shifted,” Brown said. “We’ll see what we’ve got.”
