Dallas Mavericks forward Anthony Davis took part in full 5-on-5 work this week, his first contact session since undergoing surgery in July to repair a detached retina, NBA insider Marc Stein reported.
The 32-year-old appeared in only nine games last season because of an adductor injury, averaging 20.0 points, 10.1 rebounds and 2.2 blocks. Without him, Dallas missed the playoffs a year after reaching the 2024 NBA Finals.
Head coach Jason Kidd is expected to open training camp with a starting unit of D’Angelo Russell, Klay Thompson, No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg, Davis and center Daniel Gafford. Guard Kyrie Irving remains sidelined while rehabbing a torn ACL.
Thompson welcomed the chance to line up next to Davis. “When he’s healthy, he’s the best power forward maybe of my generation,” Thompson said on the Showtime With Michael Cooper podcast. “He is a two-way force. There’s not many big men who can do what he does as far as his handle, his blocking-shot ability, his jump shot.”
A 10-time All-Star, Davis remains one of the league’s premier two-way players, and Dallas is counting on his return to spark a turnaround after last season’s fall from contention.
