The Boston Celtics cut their roster to 20 players on September 20 by waiving rookie guard Hayden Gray, according to Keith Smith of Spotrac.

Gray, 22, joined Boston in July on an Exhibit 10 agreement after going undrafted out of UC San Diego. The 6-foot-3 guard appeared in one Summer League contest, posting seven points, two assists and two steals in 20 minutes.

Smith added that Gray is expected to report to the G League’s Maine Celtics. Under the terms of his Exhibit 10 deal, he could earn a bonus of up to $85,300 if he remains with Maine for at least 60 days.

During his senior season at UC San Diego, Gray led NCAA Division I with 3.1 steals per game and averaged 11.2 points, 3.3 assists and 3.1 rebounds across 35 games while shooting 47.9% from the field and 41.8% from three-point range.

Boston can carry up to 21 players in the offseason, leaving one open slot after Gray’s release. The team officially announced three new signings earlier in the day.
