LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly moving toward a reunion with LeBron James, according to information published Wednesday, June 17, 2026, by the New York Post.

The report indicates that negotiations between the 39-year-old forward and the franchise have advanced to a stage described as “likely” to result in a new deal. James last played for Los Angeles in the 2025-26 season, averaging the 25.2 points, 7.9 rebounds and 7.1 assists that helped keep the club in playoff contention.

In addition to James’ expected return, the Post notes growing speculation that a “former LA hero” could join him if the agreement is finalized. The identity of that player was not disclosed, and no official comment has been made by the Lakers’ front office.

The team has not announced contractual terms or a timeline for completion. League free-agency rules allow negotiations to be formalized beginning July 1.

James signed with Los Angeles in 2018, leading the Lakers to the 2020 NBA championship and becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer in February 2025. A new contract would mark his third extension since arriving in Southern California.

Neither James’ representatives nor Lakers executives had responded to requests for comment at the time of publication.
