The Cleveland Cavaliers are being linked to several possible trade scenarios for veteran point guard Dennis Schroder as front-office executives weigh offseason roster moves, according to recent reports.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst indicated the Cavaliers could examine deals that would reduce payroll, prompting analyst John Hobbs of Cavs on SI to outline three clubs that might pursue the 30-year-old guard: the Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons and Orlando Magic.
Potential fits
Minnesota Timberwolves — With Mike Conley nearing the end of his career, the Timberwolves have been seeking additional backcourt depth. Hobbs suggested Schroder could serve as a secondary ball-handler behind Anthony Edwards and anchor the second unit. Possible compensation mentioned includes future draft picks and a young wing such as Terrence Shannon Jr. or Julian Phillips.
Detroit Pistons — Detroit continues to build around Cade Cunningham and Jalen Duren but lacks an experienced reserve guard. Schroder’s playmaking and leadership could address that gap, and the Pistons, where he played briefly last season, could offer a combination of veterans and young talent.
Orlando Magic — The Magic have been connected to backcourt upgrades for much of the summer. Hobbs proposed Schroder as depth behind the starters, with center Goga Bitadze or draft assets floated as potential returns.
Where talks stand
