Memphis Grizzlies rookie Cedric Coward has been medically cleared for all basketball activities and is expected to take part without restrictions when training camp begins later this month.

The 20-year-old forward told The Memphis Commercial Appeal that team doctors gave him full clearance in August, ending a rehabilitation process that started with shoulder surgery after a partially torn rotator cuff limited him to six games at Washington State last season.

Memphis traded up to select Coward with the No. 11 pick in June. Although he felt healthy by draft night, the organization kept him out of the Las Vegas Summer League as a precaution.

Coward discussed his status Saturday while throwing out the first pitch at a Memphis Redbirds minor-league baseball game alongside fellow rookie Javon Small. “I feel great in the workouts we’re doing now,” he said, adding that he is “super excited” for the Grizzlies’ first preseason matchup on October 6. “I haven’t played live competition since November, so it’s like letting the wolves out.”
