Anthony Davis Returns to Full-Contact Scrimmages Following Eye Surgery

Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis was back on the court this week, taking part in five-on-five scrimmages for the first time since eye surgery in July, according to Marc Stein of The Stein Line.

The 32-year-old big man underwent a procedure on July 10 to repair a detached retina, an injury attributed to several blows to the face during the 2024-25 season. At the time of the surgery, team doctors projected Davis would be ready for training camp, but no official updates had been released until Stein’s report on September 20.

Davis’s eye trouble began last November while he was still with the Los Angeles Lakers, when a poke to his left eye led to swelling and difficulty keeping the eye open. Vision concerns subsided after treatment, but the detached retina was discovered during a postseason examination.

The nine-time All-NBA selection was traded to Dallas on February 8 and appeared in just nine games for the Mavericks, sidelined by an adductor strain unrelated to his eye. In limited action, he averaged 20.0 points, 10.1 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 2.2 blocks in 29.6 minutes per game.

While this week’s scrimmages do not guarantee full participation when training camp opens on September 30, they mark an encouraging step for Davis. Dallas, which missed the playoffs last season, is counting on a healthy Davis and No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg to boost its postseason hopes.
