Former Kansas guard Darryn Peterson has indicated a clear preference for his NBA landing spot, according to Grant Afseth of the Dallas Hoops Journal. Peterson’s representatives have told teams he will not schedule a workout with the Utah Jazz and would rather join the Washington Wizards, even if he is not selected No. 1 overall.
Afseth reported that Peterson’s camp still believes he is firmly in contention for the top pick, with Washington weighing him and former BYU standout AJ Dybantsa as the June 23 draft approaches. If the Wizards pass, sources told the Dallas Hoops Journal that Peterson would prefer the Memphis Grizzlies at No. 3 over the Jazz at No. 2.
Utah’s front office has previously overridden player preferences. In 2025, the Jazz drafted Ace Bailey fifth overall despite reports he sought another destination; Bailey ultimately signed and completed a productive rookie season.
Peterson, 20, averaged 20.2 points as a Kansas freshman and has drawn comparisons to Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards for his scoring punch and athletic upside.
The Wizards control the first pick and, with just over a week until the draft, will largely determine whether Peterson’s wishes are met.
