Wizards eye turnaround with No. 1 draft pick and expected returns of Young, Davis

The Washington Wizards enter the offseason asking a rare question in the nation’s capital: how competitive can the club be by 2026-27?

Long drought frames the conversation

Washington has not posted a 50-win campaign since 1979, a span that covers the Gilbert Arenas, John Wall, Bradley Beal and even late-career Michael Jordan eras. The franchise’s lone championship season in 1978 came with just 44 victories, and the following year’s 54-win team fell to the Seattle SuperSonics in the NBA Finals.

Key pieces expected back

Team officials expect point guard Trae Young, acquired at midseason, to open the next schedule in uniform after appearing in only five games with Washington. Center Anthony Davis, who did not log a minute following his trade to D.C., is also projected to return, though his injury history tempers expectations.

Top overall pick headlines offseason assets

The Wizards own the No. 1 selection in the upcoming NBA Draft, positioning them to choose among prospects AJ Dybantsa, Darryn Peterson, Cameron Boozer or Caleb Wilson. They already roster former No. 2 overall choice Alex Sarr and a collection of recent first-rounders.

National projection still modest

ESPN’s first “way-too-early” power rankings, released immediately after the NBA Finals, slotted Washington 28th. Analyst Zach Kram noted the club has not topped 18 wins since 2022-23 but wrote that adding Young, Davis and the top draft pick “should” lift that floor.

Kram pointed to continued growth from Sarr, Tre Johnson and Will Riley—along with Davis’s health—as factors that could determine whether the 2026-27 Wizards fight for a playoff berth or merely improve their draft lottery position.

For a franchise accustomed to the bottom of the standings, even tempered optimism marks a notable shift.
