2026 NBA Draft: New prospect rankings, Caleb Wilson’s development, Lendeborg’s role models, and hypothetical trade scenarios

The 2026 NBA Draft is widely viewed as one of the strongest in recent memory, but a new evaluation from The Athletic positions its premier prospects just outside the elite tier of the past decade.

Top-of-the-class still trails recent elite

Draft analyst Sam Vecenie slots BYU forward AJ Dybantsa, Duke forward Cameron Boozer, and Kansas guard Darryn Peterson at Nos. 6, 7, and 8, respectively, in his ranking of the best draft prospects since 2015. North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson lands at No. 18, one place behind San Antonio’s 2025 No. 1 pick, guard Dylan Harper.

Vecenie’s top five, based on pre-NBA evaluations, are Victor Wembanyama, Cooper Flagg, Zion Williamson, Cade Cunningham, and Karl-Anthony Towns.

Trainer sees “sky is the limit” for Wilson

Robert Swain, who trains Wilson, told Mark Medina of R.org that the 6’10” forward has expanded his face-up game since UNC’s season ended. “He’s going to explode,” Swain said. “He’ll be a great teammate and do whatever the coach asks at a high level.”

Swain offered lofty comparisons, citing Magic Johnson for end-to-end playmaking, Paul George for mid-range shot creation, and Kevin Garnett for interior scoring, rebounding, and shot-blocking.

Lendeborg studies Banchero, Reid, LeBron, Magic

Michigan’s Yaxel Lendeborg—another forward with a do-it-all profile—told Duane Rankin of the Arizona Republic that he models parts of his game after Paolo Banchero, Naz Reid, LeBron James, and Magic Johnson. Lendeborg spoke after a pre-draft workout with Golden State.

ESPN proposes rare swap of top two picks

Speculation about teams moving around the board continues, and ESPN writers outlined six potential blockbuster trades. The boldest scenario would send the No. 1 pick, guard Bub Carrington, and forward Cam Whitmore from Washington to Utah for the No. 2 pick, forward Ace Bailey, and a 2029 first-rounder. The top two selections have never been exchanged on draft night.

With several franchises gauging the cost of moving up—or down—in a talent-rich class, front-office maneuvering is expected to intensify as draft day approaches.
