Los Angeles, CA — LeBron James says he will walk away from basketball the moment he no longer relishes the routine that has sustained his 23-year NBA career.

In an interview with Time Magazine, the 41-year-old Los Angeles Lakers forward explained that his passion for arriving early to prepare is the gauge that will determine his retirement.

“It’s up to the mind,” James told the magazine. “Where the mind goes, the body will lay. When I’m not in love with getting to the arenas on game days five hours before to start my preparation, if I’m out of love with getting to practice 2½ hours beforehand, then I know I’ll be done. Because then I’m going to start cheating the game.”

James noted that day-to-day demands remain enjoyable. “Hell yeah,” he said when asked if he is still having fun. “I’m sitting here talking to you. I don’t have a voice, I’ve got practice in an hour. You think I’m not having fun still?”

The four-time NBA champion just completed his 23rd season, the most in league history, and will become an unrestricted free agent this summer. His continued enthusiasm points toward a likely 24th campaign, though his next team remains undecided.
