LeBron James Says Criticism Was Aimed at Memphis Hotel, Not City Residents

Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James has clarified comments he made earlier this year about disliking team stays in Memphis, explaining that his frustration is directed solely at the hotel the club uses, not at the city’s residents.

Speaking with journalist Sean Gregory during a Time Magazine interview, James addressed the backlash that followed a viral video in which he suggested the Lakers should relocate their accommodations—or even games—to Nashville.

“Everything I say and do is overblown,” James said while getting a haircut for the feature story. “I don’t have a problem with Memphis people. I have a problem with that hotel, and I don’t like going there.”

Earlier Remarks Sparked Local Outrage

The controversy began when cameras captured the 21-year veteran expressing displeasure about overnight stays in Memphis and asserting that “many players” wished the team could instead travel to Nashville. The comments drew criticism from Memphis residents who felt the remarks painted the city in a negative light.

James reiterated that his only complaint involves the Hyatt hotel used by visiting NBA teams. He made no reference to the city’s population, racial makeup or crime rate, but acknowledged that, given his public profile, any statement he makes receives intense scrutiny.

“I know everything I say gets magnified,” he noted in the interview. “I certainly didn’t mean to offend anyone from Memphis.”

The 39-year-old star has largely avoided off-court controversy during his two-decade career, though his political and social-justice stances have occasionally drawn criticism. This incident marks one of the rare occasions in which a remark about travel logistics sparked widespread debate.
