NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said the league will review its flopping rule when the Competition Committee convenes next month in Las Vegas.
Speaking on TNT’s “Inside the NBA” before Game 3 of the Finals, Silver noted that the committee will hold a two-day session to study more than 1,000 plays and determine whether the current guidelines need adjustment.
“When we put the flopping rule in place, there was egregious flopping,” Silver said. “Players are taught to sell the calls where there is a foul, but they’re trying to draw the call.”
The issue drew heightened attention during the playoffs, particularly around Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Some fans and analysts accused the NBA MVP of frequently seeking whistles, while Thunder executive Sam Presti argued that social media has amplified the criticism. “He’s playing against six people,” Presti said at his season-ending press conference. “He’s got five defenders and the sixth defender is social media.”
Whether any rule changes emerge from the Las Vegas meetings remains uncertain, but league officials appear committed to reexamining the boundary between legitimate foul drawing and flopping.
