The NBA is on the verge of crowning its eighth different champion in as many seasons, a streak of turnover that underscores how difficult it has become to replicate the Golden State Warriors’ dominance from 2015-19.
Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area examined the landscape and noted that no franchise has reached back-to-back NBA Finals—let alone repeated as champion—since the Warriors claimed titles in 2017 and 2018. Golden State appeared in five consecutive Finals and captured three championships during that span.
Expectations for a repeat contender shifted this year to the Oklahoma City Thunder, but the Thunder were eliminated by the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference Finals. Now San Antonio, despite featuring generational rookie Victor Wembanyama, trails the New York Knicks 2-0 in the NBA Finals.
Former Warriors guard Shaun Livingston, a rotation mainstay throughout Golden State’s run, told Poole the team’s mindset separated it from the competition. “We wanted to win over everything and be remembered for such. We knew we had a moment, so we could squeeze the juice,” Livingston said.
Talent and timing also played critical roles. Stephen Curry was on one of the league’s most economical contracts while earning MVP honors in 2015 and 2016, giving Golden State financial flexibility. The 2016 salary-cap spike then enabled the Warriors to add Kevin Durant and fortify an already elite roster. “That’s a huge reason,” Livingston added.
The NBA’s current collective bargaining agreement includes stricter tax-apron penalties designed to prevent teams from amassing high-end talent in similar fashion. League officials hope the measures promote parity—an outcome reflected in the parade of new champions since the Warriors’ last title defense.
