The Philadelphia 76ers have promoted assistant general manager Jameer Nelson to executive vice president of basketball operations, placing him second in command under newly hired president of basketball operations Mike Gansey.
The move, first reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania, follows multiple reports indicating Nelson was the leading candidate for an internal promotion once Daryl Morey’s replacement was selected. Nelson also interviewed for the top front-office role before Gansey was chosen.
A native of Chester, Pennsylvania, Nelson starred at Saint Joseph’s University and spent 14 seasons in the NBA, earning an All-Star berth with the Orlando Magic. The former first-round pick joined Philadelphia’s front office six years ago as a scout and has steadily climbed the organizational ladder.
No additional staffing changes were announced.
