Mikal Bridges reminded his teammates that a quick start in the NBA Finals does not ensure a title. Speaking Friday on ESPN’s “Inside the NBA” after New York’s second straight victory in San Antonio, the forward pointed to his 2021 experience with Phoenix—when the Suns won the first two games but lost the series in six—as proof that momentum can vanish.
“Take the rest, get ready for the next game, but keep going out there and don’t stop,” Bridges said. “We’ve got nothing but the offseason, man. Keep pushing. Leave everything on that court.”
Lockdown Defense
Bridges’ defense has been central to New York’s 2-0 edge. According to The New York Daily News, he has limited De’Aaron Fox to 0-for-4 shooting and rookie Stephon Castle to 1-for-7 when matched up directly through the first two contests.
Brunson’s Late-Game Poise
The Knicks are winning despite a rough shooting stretch from Jalen Brunson, who is 19-for-56 overall and 4-for-17 from three-point range. Yet the guard has delivered critical baskets in the closing minutes of both games. “Even when you make it difficult on good players, they’re talented, so they’re going to end up making shots,” Fox said. “He’s done that, especially at the end of the games.”
Shamet Seizes Opportunity
Head coach Mike Brown praised reserve guard Landry Shamet, who supplied 13 points in 30 minutes off the bench Friday. “He probably deserved more of an opportunity because what he does on both ends is very hard to find in this league,” Brown said, citing Shamet’s mental and physical toughness.
Timely Coach’s Challenge
New York may have lost Game 2 if not for assistant coach Jordan Brink. With 2:37 remaining, Brink urged Brown to challenge a call; officials ruled OG Anunoby had been fouled, sending him to the line for three free throws that helped secure the win.
The series resumes after a two-day break, with Game 3 set for Monday night.
