The New York Knicks are looking for a way to keep both veteran guards Malcolm Brogdon and Landry Shamet on their 15-man roster when the season opens, league sources told the New York Post.
New York is hard-capped at the NBA’s second apron of $207.8 million and currently has room for only one of its veteran camp invitees. Brogdon and Shamet both arrived on non-guaranteed contracts, joining Garrison Mathews, Matt Ryan and Alex Len in competition for the final roster spots.
Front-office officials are expected to shed salary to create space for both guards, and rival executives anticipate a trade, according to the report. The player most frequently mentioned is guard Miles McBride, who logged nearly 25 minutes per game last season and is eligible for an extension next summer. Moving McBride would ease the long-term cap picture while opening a backcourt slot behind Jalen Brunson and Miles Bridges, with newcomer Jordan Clarkson already in place.
Other trade candidates include rookie wing Pacome Dadiet and second-round pick Tyler Kolek, though neither is considered as valuable on the market. Kolek’s $2.19 million salary would free only about $44,000 in additional space below the apron.
Brogdon, 31, is attempting to bounce back after appearing in just 24 games for the Washington Wizards last season. Shamet, 27, opted for New York despite other opportunities, a sign that both guards expect to survive final cuts.
Training camp will determine who ultimately remains, but the Knicks appear poised to make at least one move to accommodate both veterans before opening night.
