Karl-Anthony Towns quietly dictated large stretches of the New York Knicks’ Game 1 victory on Wednesday, providing the two-way force that allowed his club to open the series with a win over the San Antonio Spurs.

Inside presence stifles Wembanyama

Matchup tracking showed Towns serving as Victor Wembanyama’s primary defender for most of the night. The 7-foot-4 rookie managed just 2-for-11 shooting and committed five turnovers when guarded by Towns, who also exploited smaller assignments on the other end to generate consistent offense.

After the game, Towns said he felt “really confident” and “like a kid” on the league’s biggest stage, adding that thoughts of his late mother, Jacqueline Cruz, helped keep him calm.

Brunson shakes off knee and ankle scares

Jalen Brunson, who finished with a team-high 30 points, briefly alarmed Madison Square Garden when he knocked knees in the first quarter and twisted an ankle in the second. The Knicks’ All-Star point guard participated fully in Thursday’s practice without limitations, easing concerns about his availability for Game 2.

Alvarado answers when called

With Brunson momentarily sidelined, veteran guard Jose Alvarado logged 11 important minutes, posting seven points and four rebounds. “This is what I do,” Alvarado said, noting he never doubted his readiness. His energy steadied New York’s second unit during a pivotal stretch.

Villanova core remains central

The long-standing chemistry among former Villanova teammates Brunson, Josh Hart and Mikal Bridges continued to surface. “We genuinely like playing together,” Brunson said recently. Their connection has helped push New York to within three wins of a championship.

The Knicks and Spurs meet again for Game 2, where Towns’ defensive assignment and Brunson’s health will remain focal points.
