The Los Angeles Lakers start the 2026 offseason determined to strengthen a roster that flashed championship potential before injuries derailed last spring’s playoff push.
Mid-season Acquisitions and Limited Cap Space
Los Angeles rode the momentum of its stunning February 2025 trade for Luka Doncic, but a tight cap sheet left the front office with little flexibility ahead of the 2025-26 campaign. Unable to create cap room, the club added center Deandre Ayton, forward Jake LaRavia and guard Marcus Smart on short-term deals worth between $5 million and $10 million.
To remain below the first-apron hard cap, the Lakers let forward Dorian Finney-Smith depart in free agency and waived guard Jordan Goodwin, whose minimum contract carried only a partial guarantee.
Results on the Court
Ayton eventually accepted a role focused on screens, rebounding and rim protection. LaRavia’s three-point accuracy dipped, yet he supplied reliable wing defense while appearing in all 82 games. Smart rebounded on a team-friendly contract, softening the blow of Goodwin’s breakout season with division rival Phoenix.
The trio complemented the new “big three” of Doncic, Austin Reaves and LeBron James. James, 41, settled into a secondary scoring role as Doncic and Reaves drove the offense. The Lakers ripped off a 16-2 surge from late February through March, with the three stars combining for more than 76 points and 20 assists per night.
Playoff Setback
The run ended abruptly on April 2 when Doncic strained a hamstring and Reaves suffered an oblique strain during a blowout loss in Oklahoma City. James carried Los Angeles past Houston in the first round, but the shorthanded Lakers were swept by the Thunder in the Western Conference semifinals.
Key Decisions Ahead
Sixteen months after importing Doncic, general manager Rob Pelinka enters the summer with greater roster flexibility and a mandate to push the club back into title contention. James, whose jersey is destined for the rafters at Crypto.com Arena, is a free agent, and his contract decision is expected to shape the team’s offseason strategy. Reaves is also poised to hit the market once he declines his $14.9 million player option for 2026-27, adding another critical negotiation to the Lakers’ agenda.
The March hot streak proved the current core can contend when healthy. Management now looks to add depth and durability as Los Angeles approaches a pivotal summer.
